Mt Richmond Specialist School is a passionate community dedicated to meeting the unique needs of our ākonga aged from 5 to 21 years old.  We are a specialist school with 200+ ākonga located across 9 school sites in South Auckland.  Our base school is located in Otahuhu with satellite classes based in the Papatoetoe /Otara / Flat Bush / Ormiston areas.

We are seeking suitable candidates to support the unique physical and intellectual needs of our ākonga.  Applicants will be required to work with a diverse range of students including non-verbal, complex physical, and health needs.  

The successful applicant must have:

  • a full driver’s license and the ability to travel to all of the school’s locations,

  • a compassionate approach to understanding and responding to students’ unique needs and challenges,

  • the skills to be an effective team member in the classroom,

  • the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with students, teachers, and parents,

  • skills in positive reinforcement and behaviour techniques to promote positive behaviour support,

  • familiarity with various tools and technology that can help students learn more effectively,

  • the ability to support all learning opportunities for students including programmes outside the classroom,

  • an awareness of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in schools,

  • Availability to attend after school and holidays meetings / trainings,

  • NZ citizenship or have a valid NZ work visa.

Available positions are for permanent Learning Assistant/Teacher Aide Relievers who are able to relieve in all classes across the school. Hours of work are currently 27.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday (term time only). Applicants must be available to work either 8.30am – 2.30pm or 9.00am – 3.00pm to support students throughout the school day. Applicants must have reliable transport so they can work at Base or Satellite classes as needed on a daily basis. Attendance at a fortnightly team meeting is required for permanent employees. 
Positions will be paid as per the Support Staff in Schools Collective Contract. 

All applicants will be required to complete a police vetting application.  Positions will commence as soon as possible pending the return of cleared vetting results.

This permanent full-time position involves working with students aged 5 to 21 years with an intellectual, sensory and/or physical disability, who also have a range of different communication challenges and/or swallowing difficulties. Our multidisciplinary specialist team includes:  Speech-Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Social Worker, and School Nurse who work collaboratively with our teaching teams. 

We are currently seeking an experienced Speech-Language Therapist who has a strong interest in Autism and AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication). Previous experience in Dysphagia is an advantage.  The successful candidate will have a positive attitude, excellent communication and report writing skills, as well as a proven ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of people.  The ability to effectively develop relationships with children and young people, families, whanau and other professionals and agencies is essential.

Essential

The successful candidate must:

  • have a recognized qualification in Speech and Language Therapy.

  • have a qualification in Dysphagia.

  • have a minimum 2 years post-qualification experience working as a Speech-Language Therapist.

  • have a current practicing certificate and NZSTA membership.

  • have a full, clean driver’s license and access to own car.

  • demonstrate initiative, flexibility, communication and organizational skills.

  • demonstrate the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team.

  • have the right to work in New Zealand

Desirable:

  • Knowledge and experience in the areas of AAC (CAT accreditation)

  • Family and Staff Training programmes certificate/qualification (Hanen Certificate desirable)

  • Ability to support students with behavioural challenges
